Hello everyone,

This is a special request for volunteers coming to Mother of Peace in June and onwards. In grade 6 of Inkwali Primary School we have a boy that doesn't know how to read yet. This means he sits in school all day and copies words from the blackboard that he doesn't understand.

With the help of our volunteers i'd like to start a programme to help him learn the alphabet and basic reading. I will start in May of this year with volunteer Josje, who has been with us for a while already. We have to discuss it with the principle, but i'd like to send a volunteer to the school twice a week, especially for one on one English lessons with this boy. We would have to see what time is appropriate, he will have to skip another lesson.

If you would like to help out, you will be using I Care´s ACE system to teach the alphabet. I will prepare this for and with you and train the volunteer to teach. The volunteer will teach and let me know how he´s doing and i will help where i can. (I teach at I Care Christian School daily, so cannot teach him myself and him coming to our school is not an option). Once a month i will assess him myself and update the school on his progress.

All our Mother of Peace volunteers help out at Inkwali Primary School and prepare things for the children to do and learn about. This will be a separate programme for just one of the children. If anyone is interested or already has teaching experience, let me or Wilma know.

We want to have him reading!

Thanks.

Brie

Hello Brie,

On 27th of April I will volunteer at MoP, until the 19th of June. I would love to help to teach the boy to read, I think it's a great gift to the boy! I have teaching experience in Dutch in the Netherlands to children aged 12-18, so I hope to be a good help. I'd like to know more about the ACE system, but if it will be me teaching the boy one on one I will learn soon enough!

Kindest regards, Hanneke

That is wonderful! Thanks so much. In May i will teach you and Josje then and you can figure this out together. When Josje leaves, you can take over and hopefully in June there will be someone that stays in July as well, so you can teach her/him.

This will work out wonderfully.

More about ACE can be found here:

We have a document with more information about teaching the alphabet ACE style, but that is in SA and i am currently in Holland. You will get all the information you need in May.

See you then.

Great to know I can help out! I'm looking forward to it.
The link in your message unfortunately doesn't work (on my computer), but I am curious about it and willing to prepare if possible. Maybe you can find another webpage?

See you in May then!
Hanneke

This is just general information. More on the alphabet i have in SA, not here. Since Josje will be starting first, there will be plenty of time to prepare.

Thanks!

Hello future volunteers,

Our boy is doing well after a couple of months of one on one teaching. Thanks to our volunteers Hanneke, Kim, Eva and Sanne.
Siyabonga kakhulu!

He is a very slow learner and we only teach him twice a week, so more work needs to be done. If you are interested and you're coming this way, let me or Wilma know that you'd like to help Zwelakhe @ Inkwali Primary.

Thanks!

Brie
